Player's Hand Book! 20% off Player's Handbook
This is the core rule book. Everything you need to play is right here. This is the jewel of the 2nd Edition line. This introduced people to the new AD&D game, a gave us the expanded proficiency system, introduced Bards as their own class, and put all of the official spells in one place. - review by Web Warlock

Dungeon Master's Guide
If you plan on running any adventures, from a simple dungeon crawl to a full blown campaign, then this is your book. This 2nd Edition DMG is smaller than it's 1st Edition variant, but the information that you need is here. - review by Web Warlock

Dungeon Master Guide
Monster Manual Monsterous Manual
The most changes between 1st and 2nd editions can be found here. Monsters got a face lift and the Monsterous Manual is the result. One monster per page, expanded stats, a color picture from every monster. This is stuff we only dreamed of in 1st edition days. This book was also a big improvement over the early Monsterous Compendium binders.
NOTE: This book is out of print! You have to check around for new copies.

Tome of Magic
This book changed the magic system of 2nd edition. It introduced hundreds of new spells, but also new ideas in magic, such as elemenatal wizards, quest spells and wild mages. - review by Web Warlock

Dungeons and Dragons Second Edition Player Character Record Sheets
If you've got characters, then you need sheets! I know you can download them from the net or even use a bit of notebook paper. But their is something about a fresh set of PC sheets that really works for me. Besides they are fairly cheap in price, but high in quality. - review by Web Warlock

Complete Handbooks

These books really were the core for characters and races for the 2nd edition game. They introduced Kits (a lot of kits!), plus they contain new skills, spells and even treasure. These books are now hard to find, but it there is a class or race you really like then you should make an effort to get one. - review by Web Warlock

Player's Option Books

These books seem like overkill to me, but some people love them. You can still get them at Amazon.- review by Web Warlock

Spells and Magic
Expand your spellcaster in new ways. Uses many point systems, even has a spell point system. Has witches, but I don't care for them.

Skills and Powers
Expand any character in new ways. Uses the same point system as above. Expand your ability scores, classes, powers or kits. Looks like a prototype to 3E.

High Level Campaigns
A DM's option book and it has some very useful information in it. I expect to see something similar for 3E.
