ATM

"The migration plan spans several phases over many years. When the design was first conceived in 1996, there were three backbone technologies available to choose from: Of these, ATM quickly emerged as the technology "with the greater promise of scalability, survivability, and application independence than either FDDI or Fast Ethernet," says Genung. Selecting an ATM vendor came next in 1997, and after considering Xylan, Fore Systems, and 3Com solutions, the ISU team selected Cisco Systems. Genung and his team already had many Cisco products in the network, and had chosen Cisco Catalyst switches to provide switched Ethernet in residence halls and campus-based workgroups."
