[kreh-tee-ehn du twah]  [french author] [fl. 1160 - 1182] : Earliest known writer of Arthurian romance: Erec et Enide (c.1170) Lancelot (c.1182) Perceval (c.1182), et al. Probably a native of Champagne, he almost certainly inherited most of his characters and incidents from the oral Celtic Arthurian tradition, but his portrayal of them, esp. in matters of love and courtly behavior, was original to him.
